I posted this question on the alt.comp.periphs.cdr, but got no response.

I'm using Win XP Pro. I want to see the contents of a data CD that I have mastered using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. I put it in my CD reader-writer (Samsung CD-R SW-224B) and wait a few seconds. (By the way, I have two CD-RWs, different mfrs, and they both do exactly the same thing.) An Autoplay dialog box appears onscreen with a progress bar. A dialog box asks what action I want to perform on the CD. I choose to view its contents in a window. A folder window then opens showing the contents of the disc. Everything looks good, and I can see and open any file or folder I want. Now I'm done, so I close the folder window. I want to remove the CD so I press the Eject button on the CD tray. It doesn't open. Nothing happens. I press the button repeatedly. Nothing happens. I open a My Computer window. I right-click on the CD icon and click on Eject. Nothing happens. I repeat this many times. Nothing happens! In frustration I have to reboot the CD. Now when I press the Eject button the CD tray opens and I can remove the CD. This whole scenario is repeatable. Bottom line: I can never get a CD out unless I reboot the computer.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening, and how to get the CD player to release its hold on a CD without having to reboot the PC? Thank you.

Frank, go to Roxio's site and download and install any updates for
Version 5. If you are using Direct CD then the older
versions do not behave well with WinXP.

Rich,

You are so correct.

My error was in not realizing that the CD was NOT "mastered" as I thought, it was created using Direct CD (i.e., packet writing) at a time when I was still using Windows 98. Since I did not have Direct CD installed under Windows XP, I couldn't eject the disc. Downloading and installing the Roxio update did the trick!

Thank you!
