Can't edit embedded Word object

J

J. T.

I have a set of slides consisting of embedded Word objects. When I try to
double-click to edit, I get the "server application, source file, or item
can't be found" message, even though Word is installed. When someone on
another PC double-clicks, he gets the Convert File dialog box, but clicking
OK (or Cancel) doesn't do anything. When I right-click the object and select
Document Object/Convert..., nothing happens (no dialog box appears). We're
currently using Office 2003 and Windows XP. The slides were created in the
year 2003; I don't know what releases we were using then.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, Luc,

Thanks, but no - we don't use Norton as our anti-virus software, so that's
not it.

After getting your response, I decided to experiment with the Convert File
dialog box that comes up when we double-click using one of the PCs in the
office (not my PC, though). It defaulted to Encoded Text, but no matter what
type of encoding I chose, I got garbage. That was the same with Plain Text
and HTML. The XML choice said that there were problems with the contents, and
then gave the "server application" message. RTF and all the Word formats gave
me the "server application" message.

The Recover Text from Any File choice has a few lines that look like they're
identifying the material as Word text before going into garbage.

One piece of information I had wrong in my original post; the Word slides
were created in Word 2003, not an earlier version.

Don't know if this additional info helps or complicates the matter! But if
you have any suggestions, I'll give them a try. Thanks!
