can't download

A

Alfred Lorona

Vista Home Premium. Downloads used to work fine. All of a sudden I cannot
download any freeware/shareware programs. The green thingie goes across and
the download count increments normally. The box also says that the download
is to a temporary file whereas previously, my downloads went to the user
folder. Anyway, when it's done downloading, I cannot find a temporary file.
A search does not produce a location of the program or a temporary file. And
suggestions?

Thanks, AL

Download count increments?Which application are you using as the download
manager?
What is the `green thingie`?It seems you are select `Run/Open from current
location` instead of `Save` when prompted to download.Or probably you have
accidentally set `Run/Open` to be the default action for downloaded
executable files.Please check it.

by 'count increment' I mean the numbers that keep changing as the download
proceeds until it reaches the maximum number of bytes included in the
download.

The download manager is Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.

The 'green thingie' is the green ribbon that moves from left to right as the
download is in progress and that reaches the extreme right hand end as the
download terminates.

I have tried both 'run' and 'open'. Everything looks normal as the download
proceeds but the file is not in the computer. Both run and open used to
work.

The screen tells me that the download is to a 'temporary' folder whereas it
used to be my user folder when the downloads used to work. I cannot find the
temporary folder with my search option. I am using Vista Home Premium
edition. Something happened so that the download is not to my user folder
anymore and I don't know how to fix that.

Thanks for your response. AL

What you are referring to is not the `count increment` but the amount of
data having finished downloading at a given point of time.Count increments
would be when you would be re-downloading something. And just to be
precise, the correct name is not Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 but Windows
Internet Explorer 7.

Files which are transmitted to a temporary folder when you click on
`run/open` would typically lie in a system/hidden folder....and
therefore, unless specified explicitly in the search options, they will not
feature themselves in search results.
Anyway,try this:
Open the browser(for best results, make sure no other window of the same is
already open).From the `Tools` menu,invoke `Internet Options`.Go to the
`Security` tab.Make sure that the `Internet zone` is high-lighted.Click on
`Custom Level`.In the list of settings that appears, scroll down to the
`Downloads` heading (which is slightly lesser than half-way down through in
my system). There you will see two options:Automatic prompting for file
downloads and File download, besides a third one `Font download`,which is
irrelevant in this case.Set those two options to the values you desire.Click
on `OK`.Now click `Apply` and then `OK`.Re-start the browser and try
downloading something.

What happens if you download to the desktop?

I don't know. When I click on something to download, I don't get a choice of
where to download it. It just starts downloading right away to the
mysterious 'temporary file'. How do I download to the desktop? Or to
anywhere else for that matter.

Thanks, AL

If you have MSN are you using IE7 or the MSN 9 Explorer?

If you are browsing with IE7 you should see a download box with Run, Save,
and Cancel. If you click Save you get to select the location for the
download. What are you seeing when you first start a download.

btw, I use an excellent free download utility called Free Download Manager.
Consider trying it while you are puzzling out this problem if you can figure
out where it is downloading to. It is an often recommended utility.

If you have a second computer try downloading and saving the FDM package to
it and then move it with a thumb drive to the problematic machine and
running the FDM installer there.

No suggestions work. Had to bite the bullet and re-install Vista from
scratch.
