Hi,

Click start, type CMD. Right click the entry in the start menu, choose 'run
as administrator'. Then run chkdsk from the prompt. You need elevated
privileges to run this system utility.

Aren't administrators as "elevated" enough? I'm already an administrator.
So, now you have to be THE administrator?

Vista has a higher level of privilege than just the administrator account
level.
Basically, it is there to prevent malware from getting control, running
programs, etc. while you are in an administrator account.

If you don't want to be alerted to the possibility that a program that could
do harm to your system is about to be run, then you can turn UAC off.

you may be president and ceo, but unless you're chairman of the board, Vista
won't let you do anything.
right click the command prompt and select run as administrator
then try again

Even an administrator has to self-elevate in order to perform functions that
affect system files. Otherwise they run as a normal user. This is to prevent
malware from usurping the level of privilege of the account and installing
itself sight unseen. Any system access has to be intentional on the part of
the owner. This root privilege scheme has been used by other operating
systems for years and was adopted for Windows in Vista.

Can malware sit and wait for you to elevate your privileges like a hungry
cat and then "spring" into action?

Thanks. I'll try that. I don't expect it to run right away, but the next
time I boot up like WinXP.

The administrator account still only runs with normal user privileges in
Vista - that is why you get the UAC pop ups (if they are still enabled, of
course). As many have already said, the current default administrator
account also prevent malware from installing without you knowing about it.
