cant display volume in tray

i reinstalled windows media 10,everything is fine,but i cant adjust volume
because i get an error saying sndvol cannot be displayed,go to add\remove to
install.but i dont know what it is, i did it before and cant remember how i
fixed it.please give detailed step-by-step help please.the error reads like
this 'sndvol32.exe. if you can hepl i'd be so glad thanx in advance

Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>[ ] Place volume icon
in the taskbar..............
 
tried that,didnt work, i get this message 'windows cannot diplay the volume
control on taskbar because the volume control program has not been
installed,go to add/remove to install.but i tried that too and i dont see
realtec ac'97(might have spelled that wrong,but the point is, i dont have a
xp cd to fix this, i bought my pc with xp already on it,i had the volume
control b4,someone helped me redo it,but now i cannot find that info,please
help,thanx
