Can't delete some files

I have a few files in a directory and a few in the Recycle Bin which I
cannot delete. I even have an app called Unlocker which should allow
me to delete these files - but it doesn't work. Can anyone tell me a
sure and safe way to delete these files? The files in the recycle bin
tell me they cannot be deleted because they are in use by another
program. I have no idea what programs they could be? Thanks......

First step is to boot into Safe Mode and give it a try again.

I've found Unlocker to be pretty effective - though sometimes it will set it
up so the file gets deleted upon next boot, so you don't get the immediate
gratification.

Thanks, however, when I reboot, the file(s) are still there.
