Can't Delete Message in Outbox

Bernice, I congratulate you on being able to explain with clarity and detail
how you went about correcting the problem. Good job!

I don't know what is causing the problem but the only real cure has been to
blow away the whole message store folder and let it build a new empty one.

It is frustrating. Haven't had it happen to me on any of the installs I've
done, but I have tested it would with some test emails before releasing the
machine.

Word has been passed on and they are aware of the situation. When we will
see a "fix" I don't know but as long as I'm able to bring up the issue (as
well as a few others in this newsgroup), believe me, it will be brought up.

Anyway, glad you got it.

For some you have to delete both copies of the msmessagestore file. There's
one in the backup\new folder also.

Or just move everything somewhere else as others are doing. Again, its a
sledgehammer approach.

What I find maddening is there seems to be no utility to repair WinMail files
and this has been forever. Thousands of registry programs and tweaks but
nothing for email. I have heard that Windows ONE CARE has trashed more than a
few folders.

I did find that my windows mail created a second network, thus stopping the
mail from being sent... however, I still have the "ghost" in my outbox. I
was able to delete the second network... but still beyond frustration with
the email that cannot be deleted...because it doesn't exist, only to my
eyes...

"Forever"? Vista has only been released to consumers since
January 30th.

Gary, I was referring to the mail program which although it was tweaked for
vista it sure ain't new.

Sorry about the confusion

Who knows? Microsoft hasn't seen fit to release any official
information about Windows Mail problems.

hi there, this is all great advice but i cant do the renaming of the win mail
folder or delete it or move it to C drvie because of user access control...it
just wont let me do it..
i am pulling my hair out here, it has been 5 hours of phone calls, internet
searches etc etc and ive had enough...
i understand all the steps you've mentioned but if you can help some more
that would be great

First do a CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and end WinMail.exe if it is showing as a running
process. Then create a directory under Documents called OldMail. Then try
moving all the files under the Windows Mail message store directory (and all
the subdirectories) to the OldMail directory.

See if you can get that to work.

Make sure any antivirus software is disabled at the time you do all that
also.

Has anyone got a solution for this problem yet. I have tried all your
suggestions but have failed miserably. Is there a number I can call. I have a
gateway computer and my service provider is time warner. Any help would be
much appreciated.

I have read this many times in these discussions. I have a nessage in my
outbox and is blocking my other messages from being sent. I have the "error"
message that everyone is talking about. Are there any new solutions? I'm
having a hard time following some of the suggestions -- I guess I need it
broken down a little more.

I called Microsoft who told me to call my computer company who told me to
call our internet provider who told me to call Microsoft.

UGH!

It doesn't look like Microsoft is coming out with a fix for this
anytime soon.
Once you have a message stuck in the Outbox, and it is
preventing you from sending any new messages, your
options are limited:

1. Do all sending from a web-based mail service, like
Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail.
2. Switch entirely to a different email program like
Outlook, or the free Mozilla Thunderbird.
3. If you are familiar with how to use the Windows Explorer
file manager, you can try the database deletion/regeneration
fix advocated by Dave Cochran.

It seems that part of the issue is Microsoft denying that it's their problem.
I was wondering -- I don't want to change my email address. Since my
computer is fairly new and not much is in there yet, could I close out my
email account, delete it and reopen under the same email? Would that get rid
of the message?

Microsoft would walk me through the problem if I pay $50 which I have a hard
time with since my computer is new and it's their software that's the issue.
They also told me to go through the computer manufacturer who told me to go
through my internet provider. Like you, I know everything else is okay plus
we have 4 other accounts on windows mail and they're all fine. It's helped
knowing that other people have the same issue, but also frustrates me at the
same time -- fix it! :)

It certainly doesn't hurt to try what you are suggesting:
delete the account in Windows Mail, then recreate it.
It seems to work for some people, but not for most.
