Can't delete corrupted jpg

G

Guest

I'm not sure if this is the right group to ask, but I recently ran into a
problem with a corrupted jpg file. When I tried to open it, it just locked up
my XP system. So I tried to delete it after I rebooted, and it locked up
again. So I tried to delete the folder it was in, but again my system locked
up.

As long as I don't try to access the bad folder, everythng seems to be OK.

I ran a full virus scan with the latest virus definitions but nothing was
detected.

Can anyone suggest how I might get rid of this corrupted file? Thanks.

Try deleting it in Safe Mode.

Either Alias' idea or try deleting it from a DOS prompt.

Start | Run | CMD and click ok.

then go to the folder using the cd command (change directory) and use del
whatever.jpg to try and delete it.

Failing that, boot into recovery mode (from the WinXP cd) and try and delete
through there.

Hope that helps.

Open a Command Prompt.

In the Command Prompt type the following...

CHKDSK C: /F

If it replies..
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)"

Choose - Y

type; EXIT

Reboot the PC.

A full Check Disk will want to be performed, allow it.

Thanks to all who answered,

I should have mentioned the affected folder is on an external HD that uses a
USB connection. When I try to access it by changing directory I get a "device
not ready" message. When I try the CHKDSK I get a "Cannot open volume for
direct access" message.
