G

Guest

Installing some new software and as a precaution I set a retore point just
in case.

This time I get a message that says "System Restore is unable to ceate a
restore point............."

I also cannot go back beyond beginning of June so in essence I have no
restore points at all.

Can anyone tell me whats happened and why. This was working?????? How do I
get it working properly and have I lost all previous restore points, -
restore is not switched off

How much space do you have allocated for System Restore? If you don't
already know then click on the Start button and then right-click on My
Computer. Select properties and then click the System Restore tab.

If you do have plenty of space allocated for System Restore then try
turning System Restore off and then back on again.

Real operating systems don't have "restore points" nor do they need them.
This was an invention of MickeyMouse on the same innovative level as an
Etch-O-Sketch when it comes to doing any serious graphics work.

Hi,
Installing some new software and as a precaution I set a retore point
just in case.

Please post the software in question.
This time I get a message that says "System Restore is unable to
ceate a restore point............."

What were the exact steps you took to create the restore point?
I also cannot go back beyond beginning of June so in essence I have no
restore points at all.

Check to see if the System Restore Service is running.
Click Start, click Run, and then type cmd /k net start then press
enter. Check to make sure that the Task Scheduler and System Restore
Services are running.

I have just short of 10GB allocated to system restore which is 12% of total
disc space - more than enough I would of thought.

Running eventvwr.exe I get. under sr service...

Event Type: Information
Event Source: SRService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 107
Date: 04/06/2006
Time: 15:54:35
User: N/A
Computer: EPOX
Description:
The System Restore service has been suspended because there is not enough
disk space available on the drive
\\?\Volume{8ddcd483-eb3a-11da-821b-0004619457a5}\. System Restore will
automatically resume service once at least 200 MB of free disk space is
available on the system drive.

In replying to earlier post I've got 10GB allocated. Even If this "full"
doesn't system restore overwrite ???

Bert,

See also my reply to previous responses. Answering yours.....System Restore
is shown as running (control panel/system). I also input suggested command
and task Schedular and System restore shown as started. I've just tried
again to set a restore point and this time it's done it. I assume that
system restore was shut down and restarted and all previous (yesterdays
checkpoint) restore points wiped

Thanks for help. I further understand I have a clear 10GB available???

Hi,

First of all, 10GBs of disk space is to much. Reduce it down to around
1GB.

The amount of disk space allocated to SR has nothing to do with the
event log below. The event log indicates that there was insufficient
disk space on one of the partitions SR is monitoring.

If any monitored partition falls below 50MBs of free space, System
Restore will switch into standby mode and stops creating restore points.
All restore points are deleted at that time. System Restore reactivates
and resumes creating restore points as soon as 200 MB of disk space is
free on the system drive.

Check the amount of free disk space on the partition Windows is
installed on. Then stop SR from monitoring all partitions other than the
one Windows is installed on.

You may find this page of help also.

It's way more than enough. The 12% default is a poor one in my view.
Restore points more than a week or two old aren't much use, because if you
try to restore to them, you end up getting many things out of synch with
each other.

I recommend that you decrease the setting to around 3%. That would give you
2.5GB which should permit you to have two weeks or restore points and
besides saving 7.5GB of disk space, may also reduce the risk of corruption
of restore points.

Bert,

Thanks for your replies.......Slight difficulty....What's the best way to
adjust and fix the properties.????

I've gone into Control Panel/System/System restore (Tab) and see all Drives
being monitored (C,D,E & F). These are 2 physical caddied HDD's C & D and E
& F. One is a mirror copy of the other for safe backup and restore in
emergency. I try and do this at least monthly.

1. E is shown as system drive (not C:\ ???) - I can't stop montoring
without turning off SR completely. That's understood issue is why E not C?

2. I can adjust SR storage amount and turn off on other drives but even
though everything OK'd If I close then reopen SR tab all settings restored
back to what they were ???

Appreciate any further help

Further to my last replay.....

I powered down system watching HDD activity lights. System Drive is
definitely C:\ drive not E:\ as being reported by System Restore (SR)

I turned power off via power key to E & F physical drive, restarted and
went to SR tab via Control panel\System. Get error message.....

An exception occured while trying to run
c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,Contol_Runddd
"c:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl,System"

Shut down, power on to E & F drive and SR "functionality" restored.

Not sure what's happening or how to get correct drive reporting

How to Adjust the amount of disk space System Restore uses to hold
restore points:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/diskspace.html

How to disable a monitored drive:

Adding drives to a system can sometimes mess up the drivetable log in
System Restore. There are two solutions on the following page.
Drive letter missing in System Restore settings page?
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/srdrives.htm
1. E is shown as system drive (not C:\ ???) - I can't stop montoring
without turning off SR completely. That's understood issue is why E
not C?

To find the system partition, go to Start - Run and type %systemroot%
then press enter. The path to the Windows partition should show up on
the address bar in Windows Explorer.
2. I can adjust SR storage amount and turn off on other drives but
even though everything OK'd If I close then reopen SR tab all
settings restored back to what they were ???

This is very strange. See my reply to your second post.

This error message normally means that System Restore has been
corrupted. And in this case a reinstall of SR is needed.
How do I reinstall System Restore?

Warning: This will delete ALL existing restore points.

Go to Start - Run and type %Windir%\INF then press enter.

In Windows Explorer go to Tools - Folder Options - View Tab and uncheck
"Hide extensions for known file types".

Find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Or simply type or paste the following command into the Start - Run box
and press enter.

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf

If the Files Needed dialog box appears, click Browse and point to the
i386 folder on the Windows XP CD or to the i386 folder on the hard
drive, if it exists, of for systems updated with the Service Pack 2 CD
or Download from Microsoft, browse to the
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder.
Shut down, power on to E & F drive and SR "functionality" restored.

Not sure what's happening or how to get correct drive reporting

Reinstalling SR should take care of this.
