Can't correct dial-up password even after reinstall.

I entered the wrong password for my dial-up account while setting up IE6.
When I try to change it using the connections tab in settings, Explorer
reverts back to (presumably) the password I entered originally when I click
the OK button.

During dial-up, deleting the incorrect password and entering the new one
lets me get connected, but even with the save password box checked, the old
(wrong) password is back next time I try to connect.

I've reinstalled IE6 a couple of times to see if that would fix it, but
Win2000 seems to be retaining whatever setting is causing the problem.

Deleting and re-entering all my account settings from scratch doesn't help
either. This wrong password keeps reappearing.

Somebody asked about this back in 2004 and got no answer as far as I can
tell. Surprising, since it seems to me to be an inherant problem in IE. I
had a similar thing with IE4 under Win3.1, but then I could remove Explorer
completely, which I can't do with Win2000.

Please, somebody, save my hair. What's blocking Explorer from remembering my
changed dial-up password?

TIA.
