You can try cleaning the laser in the optical drive - they sell cleaning
kits at most computer/office supply stores. Otherwise, the drive may
have failed. Swap it out for a known-working burner and see if all is
well now.

What do you mean? I already did! Optical drives don't last forever and
it sounds as though yours has died. Lots of people suggest drive
cleaning kits as a first troubleshooting step for an alternative to
replacing the drive. With optical drives as cheap as they are and since
I always have quite a few lying around in the shop I simply swap out the
drive for a known-working one to see if that fixes the issue. So do that.
The question was, (Is your driver a burner) a regular cd drive will not burn
cd's, it will only read them.
What make and model is your cd drive?
