can't copy Outlook e-mails to disk

I'm having to wipe my hard disk clean and re-install the operating system. I
have managed to copy most of my files to CDs, but am not being allowed to
copy my e-mail files or address book from Outlook. I downloaded the Backup
tool, but it either nannyishly denies me "permission" or just doesn't do it
when I try to write the .pst files on to the disk. I downloaded the
instructions, but they seem to apply only to backing up on my hard drive. Am
I missing something?

Both your emails and your addressbook are held in a pst file - close
Outlook, and copy the pst file to the CD.
 
I have tried transferring the .pst file to a disk, but am refused permission,
with no explanation.
