Hello everybody, this is tehr first time i post anything,
so be patient
I have a Novell Network with 20 PC'S, everything works
fine, also i have one PC connected to internet the ip of
this computer is 192.168.0.84, all the computers connect
to internet via this PC, i put this ip address as a
default gateway and the dns form the isp.
Now I'm trying to install a 2000 server, I setup users and
passwords, shares, etc Also installed the gateway for
netware and ipx transport, all the computers have static
ip´s.
When trying to connect to 2000 server the followin message
appears "the password is incorrect or access to server
denied".
I unistall the netware client and use the Microsoft Client
set to login to a domain. and the same problem. Once i did
connect with the server but after reboot, culdn't
reconnect. Sometimes i can see ther server in the
Neiborghood but when i doubleclick on it, says "the
resource dosn't exist".
I remove the gateway and dns from one PC'S but is the same.
I can see the workgroups from the 2000 server an access
the shares
All my clients are win98 se

I can't browse the internet from the station or from the 2000 srvr if i don't put 192.168.0.84 as a default gateway and the isp dns
What can i do ?, also i need that my station colud connect with netware but i don't now how to do it
thanks in advance
All the stations have static ip addresses, and i havent setup dhcp in the 2000 srvr.
Do i need setup a DHCP service in the 2000 srvr even if my all stations have static ip addresses

Hi Jose,

DNS on your servernic(s) should point to your server-IP only.
It's much nicer to install DHCP on the server and push all the necessary
settings automatically to your clients. It will push the gateway, DNS and
WINS (if you have W9x, ME or NT4-clients).

Why do i need wins for clients w98se ? do i have to install wins on the 2000 srvr or in the stations ? or both
and why i can´t "see" the netware server from my stations if i connect with the 2000 ? how can i solve this problem

Yes Jose, W9x still needs WINS. Install it on the server.
Add options 044 and 046 (0x8) to DHCP-server, Scope options.
Did you load the client for netware on the clients?

Hi Jose,

Check your DNS-server configuration:

TCP/IP settings

Internal nic:
1.) Right click "My network places" and select Properties.
2.) For the LAN connection right click and select Properties.
3.) On the properties page double click TCP/IP.
4.) On the internal nic (when using 2 nics) the gateway should be blank. At
the bottom of the protocols page select Preferred DNS Server option and
enter the IP address for the server itself. Leave the alternate DNS server
IP blank.
5.) On the DNS-tab, verify that the only DNS server is the servers internal
IP address. Make sure the "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix"
and "Register this connection's address in DNS" selection are checked.
6.) On the WINS-tab, verify that the WINS address is the servers internal IP
address. Verify that "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" is checked and that "Enable
NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is selected.

External nic:
1.) Right click "My network places" and select Properties.
2.) For the WAN connection right click and select Properties.
3.) On the properties page double click TCP/IP.
4.) The IP should be in a different range from the internal nic. At the
bottom of the protocols page select Preferred DNS Server option and enter
the IP address for the server itself. Leave the alternate DNS server IP
blank.
5.) On the DNS-tab, verify that the only DNS server is the servers internal
IP address. Make sure the "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix"
and "Register this connection's address in DNS" selection are unchecked.
6.) On the WINS-tab, verify that there are no WINS addresses listed. Verify
that "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" is checked and that "Disable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP" is selected. This will have the effect of allowing only the internal
nic to register with WINS. NetBIOS packets are blocked by internet routers,
so no NetBIOS over TCP/IP should be permitted on the external nic.

DNS settings

1.) Open up the DNS console.
2.) Once opened, right click on the server in the right hand pane and select
Properties.
3.) On the Interfaces tab, set the server to listen only on its internal IP
Address.
4.) On the "Forwarders" tab, check the "Enable forwarders" selection at the
top.
5.) Add the ISP-DNS-numbers and click Apply. (note- In the TCP/IP settings,
we selected the choice for DNS to point to itself. If name resolution
cannot be resolved then a request is made to the forwarders. If resolution
cannot be made via the internal DNS and there are no forwarders listed, then
resolution will be made via the root hints.)
6.) On the Monitoring tab, select simple and recursive test types and click
the Test now button. Both types should pass. Uncheck test types, click
Apply, then click OK.
7.) Expand the containers beneath the servers name and click on the Reverse
lookup zone subnet. It should correspond to the network ID of the LAN with
an "x" in the last octet. If one is not present, create a Reverse lookup
zone, type Active Directory Integrated.
8.) Verify that the server has a pointer record listed for its own IP.
9.) Bring up the properties of the Reverse Lookup Zone subnet.
10.) Click on the Name Servers tab. Verify that the nameserver is the
servers FQDN with only the internal IP address listed.
11.) Click on the WINS-R tab. Enable WINS reverse lookup and enter the
domainname.
12.) Click on the General tab and set "Allow dynamic updates?" to yes.
13.) Click Apply, clik OK.
14.) Click on the "Forward Lookup Zone" beneath the container Forward Lookup
Zones.
15.) Delete any record which is not on the local internal subnet. If there
is a folder with a dot "." listed then delete it. (note- This indicates to
the server that it is the root server, which means do not go beyond this
server for name resolution.)
16.) Bring up the properties of the Forward Lookup Zone.
17.) Click on the Name Servers tab. Verify that the nameserver is the
servers FQDN with only the internal IP address listed.
18.) Click on the WINS-R tab. Enable WINS forward lookup and enter the
servers internal IP address and click the Add button.
19.) Click on the General tab and set "Allow dynamic updates?" to yes.
20.) Click Apply, clik OK.
21.) Restart DNS-server.

Open up a command prompt and type the following:

1.) At the prompt type "ipconfig /flushdns" and wait for the services to
flush.
2.) "ipconfig /registerdns" and wait for the services to register.
3.) net stop netlogon
4.) net start netlogon

Once all of this is done, open the DNS console again. Expand the Forward
lookup zones, then expand the domain folder. You should see the underscore
folders below:

_msdcs
_sites
_tcp
_udp

I already try to do as you explain, but :

ijust have 1 nic
when a try to select "enable forwarders" the check box is unavailable and on the top is a text that says :
that forwarders can´t be enable because thiis is at the top of the forest.
If i use dcpromo then how are the users to log on this server ?
please helpme i'm really tired with this thing, and as i'm iletrated in 2000 srvr....

Then you'll just have to delete the "." in the Forward Lookup Zones.
Then try to enable forwarders again.
After making changes to DNS-server, make sure you restart it.
Haven't got the history of this thread anymore, so why are you talking about
dcpromo?

Hi Jose,

The W98 shouldn't be doing the internet sharing. Your server should take
care but not with ICS.

How are you connecting to the internet?
Can you post the ipconfig/all from the server please?

How is your AD-domainname called (something like company.local?)?

Hi Marina, i've done my homework, now i can connect, let me tell you the changes i,ve made
put my w98 station with internet sharing connection in Workgroup ventas. Put on all other stations both novell and microsoft clients, put them on the workgroup ventas. Put on them default gateway 192.168.0.84, and the isp dns.
and that's it, anyway i'm still having some problems, because from time to time my sations report thar my password is invalid, and can't connect with 2000 srvr ventas.
Still i don't know if the last changes you toldme (about the reverse lookup zone) is working.
as you ask me here is the ipconfig/all from the w98 ?
Why you say that i shouldn't be using a w98 with icshare for internet ?, what problems do I have ?

Hi Jose,

You have a server, so let it do all the serving including internet.
Is this a modem or router or what that you are using to get to the internet?

Put a second nic in the server, attach it to a router and let the router
make the connection to the internet.
Your internal nic on the server would be something like:
IP 192.168.0.2
GW blank
DNS 192.168.0.2

External nic:
IP 10.0.0.2
GW 10.0.0.3 (which will be the IP of the router)
DNS 192.168.0.2
External nic should only have TCP/IP bound to it and in the advanced
properties, tab DNS it should NOT register in DNS and the suffix should NOT
be added.

Check the bindingorder in Network Connections, Advanced, advanced and make
sure that the internal nic is on top.

In DNS-server, tab forwarders you put the ISP-DNS-numbers.

Hi Jose,

It really is much better and easier to let your server handle the internet
for your clients.

No, there shouldn't be a problem with 2003 Server. What kind of problems are
you talking about?
