Can't connect using RDC to Soho Firewall

Hi. I am trying to connect using Remote Desktop Connection to my customer's PC. They have a Soho firewall/VPN. I can VPN in but cannot connect to any of the PCs behind the firewall. They all have remote desktop available. At my home office, I have a D-link wireless router. I enabled port 3389. I think maybe its an addressing issue as my home office & the customer's site are in the 192.168.x.x schema

any ideas?

You shouldn't be able to use VPN with them at all if you're using the same
exact IP range/subnet settings. Can you change yours if you're both using
192.168.0.0 (or so
on) to something else? It doesn't matter if they're on 192.168.0.0 if you're
on 192.168.1.0, etc....

Write back if this is already the case, and mention whatever error messages
you're getting. You're using the host computer's private IP in your RD
client to connect, no? Since you're using VPN, I wouldn't think you'd have
needed to open up port 3389 on their router anyway - or is that not what you
mean?

everything you said is right, however I cannot change the addressing on my home connection. I have cable internet and am using a router with an ip of 192.168.0.1 and I don't believe I can change that. If I change the ip addressing on my home pc from dynamic to static then I don't have internet connectivity

to answer your question, yes, i am using the host computer's private IP on my R
client to connect. when i spoke with the cable company, they suggested using the public ip of the customer's router.. that didn't work either...hope this helps.

Ask your ISP if they can change the router config so that your internal
addressing is whatever you wish. They ought to be able to. If not, maybe you
can get your own broadband router/firewall (Netgear FR114p is a nice
inexpensive choice) and use that - set up DHCP/NAT on there to use whatever
you wish. You'll be using double NATting but it ought to work. (?)

Like I said, the VPN shouldn't be able to work at all if both networks are
on the same subnet.

The router is mine a D-Link 614+ cable/dsl wireless router. Can I enable DHCP/NATing on it somehow? Can I change the internal ip address?

It's already doing DHCP and NAT. You should be able to change it to use the
internal IP address assigned to it to one on your desired network...and
change the DHCP server settings to use the appropriate scope, and hit apply.
You'll lose connectivity while this goes thru - renew your IP address
afterwards & see how it goes. Just be very careful not to lock your keys in
the car - review your changes carefully before clicking "go".
