Can't connect to PC Magazine web site

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. A web site that I visit daily,
www.pcmag.com, is suddenly inaccessible. I can log into other sites without a
problem, but when I try to access www.pcmag.com, either through my Favorites
or by typing in the URL directly, I get a long delay followed by the
"Internet Explorer cannot display this web page." This problem cropped up
suddenly and for no apparent reason. I can access the site on other computers
on my network, so I'm the only one having this problem. Any suggestions?

Have you tried clearing your cache and revisiting the site?

Maybe it's a Flash or Java issue. The page opened fine for me, but the
first thing up was an animated ad.

You're not using the 64-bit browser are you? (Excuse my stupidity, but I
don't even recall if there's a 64-bit version of Premium. If not, then my
question doesnt make sense.)

I'm not sure what the relevance of the 64-bit browser is... but 64-Bit
versions are available for Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise,
and Ultimate.

64-bit browsers have trouble with some sites because there are no 64-bit
versions of particular browser plug-ins.
I forget specifically which plug-ins have that problem, but it could be
Flash, Java, etc. I'm not sure.
I'm sure someone will chime in and clarify.
Anyway, that's the relevance of 64-bit to this discussion.

Are you sure there's a 64-bit version of Home Basic? That seems to be a
contradiction in terms -- 64-bit Vista Basic.

Yes, I've cleared the cache a couple of times - temporary Internet files,
history, cookies, the whole batch. No change as of yet. Thanks!

No, I'm running the 32-bit version of Vista. The puzzling thing to me is that
it has worked for months now and only recently began to be a problem. The
fact that it's just that one site makes it even more confusing. I appreciate
any advice or suggestions you may have.

Sounds like you may need to clear the DNS Resolver Cache. Try IPCONFIG
/FLUSHDNS from an elevated command prompt and see if that doesn't
correct the problem.

I followed your instructions and restarted my browser but the problem is
still there. Another oddity; at times when I type the URL into the address
bar, it will take me to www.google.com and display the search results for
"www.pcmag.com." The top result, of course, is a link to the PC Magazine web
site, which I select in the hope that it will work - it doesn't. What now?
Thanks for the suggestion - I thought it would work!

The oddity with Google makes it sound even more like a DNS problem. Try
going to a command prompt and typing "ping www.pcmag.com" and post back
with the results.

Here are the ping results. Note that "pcmag.com" resulted in a response, but
"www.pcmag.com" timed out? Significant? Thanks!

It loads fine here on both IE6(XP) and Vista(IE7).

Have you tried adding the site to the trusted sites or looking in restricted sites to see if it is present.

Antivirus, is Norton in use...if so temporarily disable internet worm protection and test.

Somewhere along the line your DNS lookup for www.pcmag.com is going
wrong. Since it works from other PCs on the network, it may be that
you are using different DNS servers somehow. Do an IPCONFIG /ALL on
your PC and on a PC that can get to the site and compare the DNS Servers
entries.

Another possibility is that you have an entry in your
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file that is pointing
www.pcmag.com to the wrong IP address. It is just a text file, so you
can edit it with notepad and see if there is a line with that IP Address
and www.pcmag.com on it. If there is one, just delete that line and
save the file. FYI, you'll need to be running notepad as administrator
to be able to save changes to the file.

Also, when I had you try IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS, what was the response? Was
there an error, or did it say "Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver
Cache"?

Dave

Hi, Dave,

When I ran the IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS command, the response was "Successfully
flushed the DNS Resolver Cache." I'm going to try editing the HOSTS file and
report on the results of that momentarily. Thanks for all your help!

Glad it worked! I'm not sure why there would have been an entry for
pcmag.com in the hosts file though. Normally you don't need to do
something like that, and usually if that file has been edited someone
knows about it. All the same, I'm happy to have helped.

After fixing the PC Magazine web site problem, I remembered that I had been
having trouble loading the Google Maps site also. I edited the HOSTS file and
removed the maps.google.com reference, and solved that problem as well.
Should I be concerned that I had to do this?
