Can't connect to internet after SP2 install

When I try to establish a dial up connection on my newly
upgraded SP2 machine, on connection the task bar appears
to freeze, and although I can manipulate desktop icons I
can't run them.

I've gone back to basic Win XP and it seems to work, so I
think there is some sort of fault with SP2? Does anyone
have any ideas?

Dan,

if nobody comes forward with a specific solution, the next thing
is a repair installation of Windows XP.
