I have tried two different network interface cards, one of which was
on board, and both fail XPs network diags while pinging their own
address (192.168.1.101 or 100) . Both are on Microsofts XP hardware
list.
Email and internet connectivity is fine, but I can't communicate with
other workstations on my network.

Firewall configured to allow File & Printer Sharing on your own Network?

Yes, everything except remote desktop. I have also disabled the
firewall. I have also double checked the computer name and workgroup.

Windows XP Home or Professional?
Simple File Sharing on or off?
Used the Network Setup Wizard?
What type of Router is it?

Windows XP Pro, sp2, all updates applied
Network Setup Wizard was used, I selected:
Computer connects to internet through gateway
Computer name is unique, workgroup is correct
File and printer sharing is on
Router is a Linksys BEFSR41

Email and internet connection is fine.

After 15 sec delay, Window Explorer will show the workgroup, but errors out
when you click on the workgroup. It doesn't show it's self in the workgroup.
Error says "List of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

Other computers on the network are fine, but cannot see this one on Window
Explorer.

I have changed cables, ports and network interface cards.

Computer will ping other workstation at 192.168.1.131, but not it's self.
Other computer will ping it's self, but not the problem computer at
192.168.1.101.

The only failure on Network Dianostics (with both NICs) was the ability to
pink address 192.168.1.101

Tom:
This is exactly the same problem I have. I'm running Windows XP Home on a
computer that previously used Windows Me, and that previously was part of my
network when it ran Windows Me. I bought the full XP Home version, though,
and clean installed. I too can access internet, network printers, and ping
other computers on the network from the problem PC, but cannot ping the
problem computer from other computers and the problem computer cannot ping
itself. Did you get your problem solved? When I click to "View all
Workgroup Computers" it tells me I don't have access to them -- your same
message.

I am having the same problem with my network...email and internet is working
but cant access my files and printer. Is there a fix for the problem?
Thanks, Harry

Harry,
I fixed my problem, and it was all the fault of my Norton Internet Security.
I can't recall the exact solution I used but you will need to check Norton
documentation, or whatever firewall you might be using, for how to fix it.
If you are running Norton or another internet security program or firewall,
disable it and try to connect to your other computers/printers. Hopefully
this will work. Then you can configure your firewall to let traffic through.
