Can't connect to computer on my home network - "Access is denied"

Disclaimer: Very little networking or Windows knowledge here....

First, I have an HP Pavillion Desktop and Sony Vaio Notebook (both running
Windows XP Home), Westell WireSpeed DSL Modem, Belkin 54g Wireless Router,
Linksys WPC54GS wireless network card, and my HP plugged into one of the LAN
ports on the router. I ran Network Setup on both computers, chossing the
"residential gateway" and "file/print sharing ON" options for both. I am able
to connect to the internet from both computers. I can "see" both computers in
the workgroup window. I can access the Sony from my HP, but when I try to
access my HP from the Sony, I get an error message (\\Hp is not
accessible..might not have permission...contact the administrator...Access is
denied). BUT, if I type the name of the folder in a command line, I can get
into the folders without a problem.

I've seen some of the advice here for similar problems, but have no clue
where to begin. Can anybody help???

Try clicking on My Computer, then opposite clicking on your local disk, then
selecting Sharing and Security... When the window comes up make sure the
Share this folder option button is selected. If this is already done you
will want to check the Permissions section. This should get you moving in
the right direction.

Make sure the browser service is running on the desktop computer. Control Panel
- Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Disable the
browser on the notebook. Power both computers off, power the desktop on, and
finally the notebook.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers give the same result.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

What is the error message number with access is denied?

What SP level on each computer? Any firewalls (now or in the past)?

If no help yet, provide ipconfig information for each computer, and we'll
diagnose the problem.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Thank you for everyone's help so far...

<SNIP>

OK, to start, the "error = 53" in Browstat on HP indicates a problem resolving
the address of Sony (the master browser).

Did you reset the browser, as I recommended in my previous post?

Any firewalls (now or in the past) on either computer? This would be the most
likely cause of name resolution problems.

If no firewalls involved, then let's try changing the Node Type.

Both computers are using Node Type Hybrid.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=160177

Run the Registry Editor on both computers.

You need to find this key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters]
and check these two values (which ever is there):
NodeType
DhcpNodeType

One of those values will have the value "8" (Hybrid). Try changing it to "4"
(Mixed). Then reboot.

The Registry Editor is a scary tool, but it's pretty simple once you get used to
it. Here are a couple articles that might help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters]
before deleting the values.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it to the
registry.

Still can't browse my desktop from the notebook....

I reset both browsers in Admin Services, then powered down both PC's...even
reset DSL modem and wireless router...then changedDhcpNodeType from "8" to
"4" in registry of both PC's as in above post and rebooted...no luck.

The only firewall (past or present) is Windows Firewall, which are both ON.

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanks again.

Did you enable the File and Printer Sharing exception in the Windows Firewall
wizard?

Yes, when I ran the Network Setup Wizard. The box is also checked in the

OK, let's try diagnosing the problem. Take the following code (everything
inside the "#####"). (Did I get the names and ip addresses right)?

Copy the code, precisely as it is keyed, into Notepad. Ensure that Format -
Word Wrap is not checked.
Save the file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please.
