Can't connect to admin shares

I have 2 computers running XP pro in a work group with server 2000, and both
machines are identical because I've imaged them, the original machine won't
download updates when the image one will, the problem I'm having is I can't
connect to the admin shares using Command line \\computername\admin$ it keeps
asking for user name and password. All admin shares come up with same
problem, I need to be able to connect to the Admin$ as I want to run audit on
demand software.

Thanks that helped sort out a couple of issues, I have other shares now, but
still no admin shares open. I can can view, ping, and access but as I've said
still can't access admin shares by \\computername\admin$ still keeps asking
for user name and password. will have another look through websites you
posted to see if I've missed anything but any other help is welcome.

what do you receive if uisng net view \\compautrename? if it is system error 5, this is permission or cahced credentials issue. check the security settings.

3 machines have been setup the same, using net view \\computername they show
shared folders and printers but no admin shares, I've had a look at
howtonetworking.com. and gone through most of the links but still can't find
how to rectify this, is there something I've missed or haven't I used the
right link yet? I'm sure it's something simple I've missed, I've checked
permissions, but that shouldn't be an issue because the users have
administrator rights, I've tried to look at permissions for admin shares but
it just shows refresh in menu, am I looking in wrong place. Thanks again for
all previous help

Can view Admin shares on actual computer but can't view or connect from
network server.
