Cant connect 2 pcs through ethernet cable

I am trying to connect 2 pc's by using an Ethernet cable. As far as I have
heard, this is very simple because XP tells you automatically that you are
connected to another pc and so you can start transferring data but nothing is
happening. I can't not see or find neither of the pc's.

I don't know if it matter that one is running XP home edition in English and
the other one is running XP professional in Spanish.

I have done it before with one of the pc using the infrared port and
everything was fine. In that case both were XP home edition in English.

Does anybody have any idea what to do???

If you are connecting two systems directly, using a cat 5 cable. You need to
ensure that you are using a crossover cable where two cables on one end are
swapped. I belive that this site may have the information you want. The
easiest way to connect two systems together is to use a hub or router.\Hop
this helps

Perhaps a stupid remark but are you using a crossed UTP ethernet cable ???
You should to connect 2 pc's without a switch.
