Can't complete Installation - Blue Screen of Death post first boot

Guest

I been trying to install several builds of Vista 32Bit (latest one 5536) but
everytime when the computer reboots and the final phase of the install is
running, I get a BSD and there is no way to complete the installation. Since
Windows XP SP2 runs just fine, I suspect Vista got an issue with my specs.
Kind of strange since I have a pretty standard comnfiguration and we are so
close to RC1.
Any ideas?

My specs:
AMD 64 +3200
MSI Neo Platinum 2
nForce 3 ultra
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro
2GB (1X OCZ 1XCorsair)
SATA Drives (WD Raptor 74 & Segate)

Just a quick suggestion, remove all USB peripherals with th exception of USB
keyboard/Mouse (if you have them), i.e, printer, modem, webcam etc, and see
if that works.

Hi
EXACTLY same problem as yahonfr . (BSOD at the end of installation) with
the ATI driver with build 5536 . Curiously, NO problem at all with Vista
Beta2 . Will try with no usb periphical and will give you a feedback

Same problem here. I've got a Sapphire x1600 and with any build after Beta2
and the first build that had the aero mouse pointer i get BSOD. It'll go back
and say completing install etc but then just bluescreen with atikmdag.sys,
been trying and trying here with no luck

I managed to get it to work!
I did 2 things at the same time so I am not 100% sure which one did it:
1. In BIOS - video card settings were on 128MB, my card got 512MB so I
changed it to 512
2. I disabled the AC 97 sound card from BIOS for the duration of the install

BTW - if you have a REALTEK AC 97 sound card - windows vista will try to
update the driver form windows update but fail. just go to the realtek site
and get the latest driver

Ok i'm in 5600!! I rebooted back into Windows XP, went to the Vista's
system32 dir and renamed atikmdag.sys to atikmdag.doc rebooted and that
worked, I installed ati's rc1 drivers but still need to get the ati icon
back, and my sound blaster live card ain't working at all, need to get that
fixed then think i'll be set

But still have a yellow ! in device manager for the x1600 even after install
ati rc1 drivers. So i tried just letting Vista pick and rebooted but got
bluescreen so had to do last known good config. Bad part was right before
that i got my sound blaster live driver installed but now it's not letting me
install the driver for that again.

Same kind of problem. Below is my story.

I was trying to update my copy of Vista Beta 2 to the newly released
Release Candidate 1 using the the DVD I was sent, the update went ok for
awhile then about the last 90% or so it restarted. Upon finishing the restart
the new Vista RC1 loading screen came up (The one with the green progress bar
and the black background) then just after that a blue screen came up full of
text and at the bottom I made out the line about it creating a dump file for
some reason, but thats all I could make out since the screen was there and
gone in 2 seconds (too quick to take a picture with my digital camera). Then
it restarts, and does it again..... endlessly. I used the memory tester
program thats on the Vista RC1 DVD, but it passes all the tests. I'm not sure
whats happened, or if theres a way around it.

Hi, Froby.

WHAT same issue? The message you quoted from says the poster was using "the
new Vista RC1", so it must have been from at least a year ago and at least a
couple of months before Vista RTM.

What version of Vista are you trying to install? 32-bit or 64-bit?
I'm doing an upgrade install over xp sp2 and everything seemed to be

Have you seen all the reports from users who have tried to upgrade, as
opposed to doing a clean install? Upgrades are sometimes successful, but
often not. MANY upgraders, even after a successful upgrade, have elected
later to reformat and do a clean install after all.

A few weeks ago I had to do a repair install (also known as an in-place
upgrade) of my 8-month-old Vista Ultimate x64 after an unsuccessful update.
I was just "upgrading" from Vista to the same Vista. It took 5 hours to get
to the "upgraded" desktop to start the final tweaks. :>( The operation was
a success, but it took a lot longer than I expected.

You've given us no info as to the software you have installed on WinXP, but
your best course might be to back up your data, locate all the media to
install your applications, and choose to Custom Install Vista. Yes, you'll
need to reinstall your apps later, but total elapsed time might be less than
doing an upgrade, even a successful one. (How much time have you spent on
it so far?)

Hi, Froby.
i'd been up for 30 hours fighting with the above problem.

Been there. Done that. No apologies required, but thanks for the
explanation. ;<}

Thanks for the report back and I'm glad you're up and running.

I was able to install Ulimate 32 with no issues. I've tried installing 64
bit twice now with a clean install. Each time I receive the
IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL error on the dump screen. I'm using an ASUS M2N-SLI
Deluxe MB, evga 6800GTS, 4GB of RAM (took another 4 out just in case it was
that). Any help is appreciated.

How far does it get? Maybe the BIOS is your problem, I don't have time
to look but can you check for info on the Asus website? I have the same
MB (Not tried the 64 bit install though) and I'm wondering about the BIOS.

What other boards you have in there? Can you start by setting the BIOS
options to Plug and Play O/S = NO so the BIOS has to examine hardware
again. If any of this proves useful please post back and let us know, it
could help lots of other people.

I installed the latest BIOS. I was able to get the 32bit version to work but
it only recognized 3.5GB of RAM. I have 8, thus my attempt at 64 bit. Tried
you PNP suggestion. No go. 'bout to have a drink and figure out how in the
world I spent 400 on something I'm so much difficulty with.

Hmm, and you say this a clean install so it's looking like it has to be
hardware related. Is this always the same place it happens?

I assume you had no trouble with the same RAM in 32 bit.

I can't think of any other BIOS settings that should matter but I
haven't really touched that machine since setup as it is used by someone
else and runs XP 32, but if I get chance I will see if I can have a look
at settings in case anything obvious jumps out...

Any other hardware you have installed that might be causing it?
Disconnect printers and anything USB (Just in case) and in the worst
case you could try just one stick of RAM and then swap with another, of
course that needs caution re static...

After that I guess there'll only be the disk drive, which is not
impossible but I think unlikely.

In general, that error is specific to a device driver. Analyzing the
dumpfile should reveal which driver is crashing and give you a hint on
what to look for updates for.

How does one update a driver before the OS is installed?
