Can't close Word file

Having trouble with closing Word files. It gives me a 'switch to...' message
but then will not do anything. File I was using is recovered although save
did work okay. Will let me change user and restart. Have sent error
reports, all updates complete - Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers.
Ideas?
