Can't close main IE window

Dwight

I am workin on a Compaq Presario 7000 running windows ME,
Athlon 800 cpu, 128 MB Ram, IE6 (just upgraded).

Every time I bring up Internet Explorer, I cannot get the
window to close without using Control Alt Delete, but any
popup windows that come up I can close and any subsequent
windows that I open up I can close, just not the first
Browser Window that opens up.

A little history, this machine had some Viruses on
it, "downloader.trojan, js.exception.exploit, trojan
horse, trojan.sinkin, and vbs.haptime.a" I ran Norton
Corp antivirus on the drive as a secondary drive to my
server, and it found and quarantined the infected files,
I then deleted them.

Any ideas what could be cuasing this issue with IE not
closing down properly???

Thanks in advance!!

I suspect something Internet Explorer uses may have been messed up
when you got and removed the parasites.

I had Internet explorer 6 problems with ME also and was able to
straighten it out by reverting to the previous version then installing
5.5sp2 which runs like a champ.

To uninstall 6.0 go to the control panel and into "Add/Remove
Programs" and highlight the entry for "Microsoft Internet explorer..."
and press the "Add/Remove" button.
Then select the option to "Restore the previous windows configuration"
and press the "OK" button then the "Yes" button on the next window to
go back to your previous version of Internet Explorer.

Yes, Internet Explorer 5.5 was hard to find. I tried the evolt.org
download and it just gave me a bunch of DOS errors that quickly
disappeared and wouldn't install IE5.5. Against my better judgment I
checked with on-disk.com as a Microsoft guru in this news group
recommended and got the full install version of Internet Explorer 5.5
SP (service pack 2). To my surprise it installed perfectly and is
running great on both Windows ME and Windows 95.

I want to say a special "thank you" for whoever the Microsoft guru was
that gave me the link to http://on-disk.com/ie55sp2.html

Interesting facts:

Dual boot main computer: WinME/PCLinuxOS - 700 Pentium III, 40Gig Hard
Drive
Second computer: Win95 - Celeron 366, 10Gig Hard Drive.

1. My windows 95 setup runs as fast as the Windows ME system.
2. Windows ME was having problems with Internet Explorer 6.0sp1 so I
downgraded to 5.5SP2 and it's very stable again.
3. Open Office runs equally well on PCLinuxOS, Windows ME, and Windows
95, even though it didn't find Java when installing on 95. It appears
to make no difference in functionality.
4. According to my computer illiterate wife PCLinuxOS is easier to use
than Windows ME. She has actually been able to install programs and
change her own password in PCLinuxOS.

Yes, Linux can be easier to install and use than Microsoft Windows.
PCLinuxOS is easier to use. You can even run it just from the CD
without changing anything on the computer to test it out. I ended up
installing it and rarely go into Windows ME anymore.

When I was at on-disk getting IE5.5 I saw the CD for Open Office and
got it along with PCLinuxOS (a great review there by the way). I was
already using Open Office on my Windows ME computer but sometimes that
system is occupied by my wife and wanted it on the Windows 95 system
also.

The cool thing about on-disk is that you can get about anything
downloaded and sent to you on a CD, a great thing if you use dialup
like we do and want to download huge things like operating systems.

Here are the direct links to the 3 items I got at on-disk in case you
are looking for them like I was:
Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 -

Open Office 1.1 - http://on-disk.com/product_info.php?products_id=29
PCLinuxOS - http://on-disk.com/product_info.php?products_id=37

I to had a similiar problem. If you are using XP Home Addition this will probably work for you also.
1. Start Internet Explorer 6.
2.Click on "Tools"; Internet Options.
3. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
4. Cursor down to the line saying "Java (Sun).
5. Uncheck the box saying "Use Java 2 v.....
6. Restart Windows and try Internet Explorer, you should be able to close the program using the "X" box in the upper right corner of the window or any other way you normally close the Browser.
Good Luck!
