Hi all, just got handed a problem.

On a new computer, Dell P4 running windows 2000 with all service packs and
updates, the users can not click on the ³X² and close internet explorer. I
ran Norton, also with latest updates, and Ad-aware and Spybot-search and
destroy. Found a lot of tracking cookies, data miners etc but the problem
persists.

What happens is this: opening internet explorer is no problem, but when
trying to close it by the ³X² the screen freezes. Strangely I can minimize
the window and maximize it again, but it remains frozen. I can open another
window, but it has the same problem. Also, in shutting down the computer I
get the box that says ³Internet explorer is not responding...² and it is
either click ³end now² or wait and it closes.

I know there is something inside messing with the works and my mind, but how
do I get in and get rid of it.

Thanks

Kevin

-- Try clearing out the cache....corrupted temporary files can cause this
kind of behaviour

-- Does this happen in Safe Mode? If not, there may be some third-party
component that is loading up and causing problems.
To disable these:
- Open Internet Explorer
- Clear the checkbox for "Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) found in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced

If this works, then you can proceed to delete the one(s) causing the
problem:
- Run Regedit
- Entries for browser extensions will be found in the below key.
Export and delete the suspect ones.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions

-- Also, there is a problem with WMI that has been known to cause problems
with IE, see article Q834010. You may need to apply the hotfix

Let me know if any of this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I do not think that it is the temp file since I
checked the box "Empty temp folder when browser closes". When I get back to
the school I will try your solution. One question though, what are suspect
browser extensions?
