CAN'T CHECK DISK C: DRIVE

R

Richard White

Hi,

I have used [My Computer]->C:->Properties etc. to schedule a Check Disk of the C: (NTFS) drive on
next reboot.

When I boot/restart I get an error msg like:-
"can't get direct access to the NTFS drive C:"

Unfortunately the msg doesn't hang around long enough for me to memorise it or write it down.

The Check Disk then terminates and normal WindowsXP log on proceeds.

I then tried starting the PC in Safe Mode.

With Safe Mode, it gets as far as the listing of the drivers loaded, and then hangs - with the disk
i/o thrashing. This goes on 'for ever', and the PC does not proceed to a workable Safe Mode.

It might be doing the Check Disk, but there is no notification of anything - and despite leaving it
for about 20 minutes, the screen did not move past the list of drivers.

Does anyone have a solution to
1. Getting Check Disk to run?
2. Getting the PC into Safe Mode?

Many thanks

can you boot from your windows CD and get to the command prompt from the
console? it should work quick search found this

Bootup from the Windows2000/XP installation Cd-Rom, after setting your BIOS
on the computer to boot from Cd-Rom, & once the install cd starts to boot,
don't select the install option...

Instead, opt to use the Recovery Console!

* It has a chkdsk.exe command & it works very well!

(To see its options, once in recovery console, type chkdsk /? to see the
ones to use... they are different than the options allowed/given when
running under explorer.exe shell (where you run to & boot to ordinarily when
you start Windows 2000/XP etc.)).

OK - thanks for that ... BUT ....

1. How do I get the PC out of the failing check disk loop?
Every reboot it now tries and fails to check disk drive c:

2. If fixing (1) doesn't solve my inability to get into safe mode
HOW do I get the PC to go into safe mode ever again???

Many thanks
