cant change screen resolution

For one of my games i have to change the screen
resolution, but once i click apply and it goes dark it
goes back to the one i didn't want.
 
Sound like you are trying to set video to a setting that your monitor wont
handle.
What is the setting its requiring?.
ie 800x600 or 1024x768 or what
