Can't burn CDs - get error message

I'm having a problem with my CD writer - I insert a blank CD and when
I try to open the CD drive it prompts me to insert a CD, even though there is
already one in the drive D. And when I try to use the Roxio Easy CD Creator
on my computer (which is what pops up when I insert a blank CD) to make a
data CD, and click format CD I get the following error message: Unknown
error. Drive reported an unknown error (0x17) You will not be able to read
and write to the CD through drive letter acccess. In additon, when I click on
properites for the inserted CD it tells me there is 0 MB free space, although
I think it should read 800 MB or so. I can still play CDs and DVDs on my
drive, and it is a CD-RW drive - Any suggestions??

I followed this link and downloaded the updated version of Roxio Easy CD
Creator Basic 5.3.10v and rebooted, and when I did this and put a blank CD
in, my computer read itsn't available space and I was able to copy files over
and then when I clicked "write to CD", it went through the whole process and
after about 3 minutes a message popped up saying that the CD write wizard was
unable to write, and that CD may not be usable or something to that
effect...I haven't been able to find any tips on the website you sent me
before, so any other suggestions? Thanks for your help
