Can't buikd a Link between Unbound Forms

I have a form and several sub forms on different tabs that are linked on the
primary key of the main form and foreign key in the sub forms. When I go into
the properties of the form/subform and click on either the link child or
master fields to change the linking I get a message saying "Can't build a
link between unbound forms", and don't get the field linker box to open.
Access then takes out the field name in the child or master link line that I
was on. The forms are bound by their respective queries.

I can link the 2 manually by putting in the fields, but not with the field
linker box. I can create a link between the forms and wizard, but get the
error when I manually attempt to change them.

Even when I create a new form with a sub form that doesn't have tabs I get
the same error.

There are relationships between all of the tables.

The form/subform connections work 99% of the time, but I get a ODBC call
error on the sub form (connected to SQL Server 2000 Back end.) every once in
a while, and then lose connection to all the sub forms. I am trying to figure
out if the 2 things are connected.

Thanks in advance for your help, I really appreciate it.

Manually typing in the field or control names will work. It may be
inconvienent, but the linker tool has no way of knowing which
fields/controls should be linked with an unbound form.

Paul,

Thanks for the reply. What confuses me is that why is Access viewing them
or one of them as unbound. They both contain recordsources and all fields
are bound. The master form and child form both share a LoanID field that
link them together.

I don't mind typing in the fields, but I'm concerned that Access is treating
the links in this manner, and that this is causing the error with SQL Server.
I might be wrong, but I'd like to see if this is the case.

Thanks again for help
