Can't browse web pages with Win XP Pro SP2 and IE 6 SP2

My all WinXP Pro home network has a laptop and a desktop hard wired, with my
internet access via dial up modem on the desk top.

All printer and file sharing and desk top remote features work well.
Internet connection from the laptop via the desktop okay (using OS SP1 - see
below).

The desktop I have has two hard disks with 2 WinXP Pro OS's and IE6; one at
SP1 and one at SP2. SP1 connects perfectly with the web and I can do
anything. SP2 is configured in EXACTLY the same way and I cant read naff all
on the web except the opening home page.

Any link or new URL results in:
a) "Page cannot be displayed" heading with a "Can't find server or DNS
error. Internet Explorer" at the bottom or

b) "Http 404 - File not found Internet Information Services" at the page
bottom.

Mostly case a).

I can ping all IP addresses shown under "ipconfig /all" (server, client, DNS
etc).

If anyone can help, would be much appreciated. Thanks
Robert
