Can't browse network after establishing VPN

T

Todd Hickman

Hi, all! I'm experiencing a quirky problem with XP Pro's VPN client.

It establishes a connection and logs in just fine, but when I try to browse
or connect to a host (computer or server) on the connected network, I can't
make connection.

The office network is using a VPN server with NAT. I'm able to establish
correctly with Win98SE and WinME (of all things), but not WinXP. I'm using
the built-in PPTP VPN client.

I've tried establishing a connection via "Add My Network Place" and via the
RUN line. Most of the time, typing \\192.168.1.xx will work. No dice with
the XP machine. I haven't been successful using the VPN client to ANY of my
customer's VPN servers.

Any clues? I'm dead in the water without being able to traverse my
customers networks.

Thanks, in advance, for any/all help!
Todd

The only way to browse the network is to have a WINS server installed
on the server-side network.

Trying to access shares using UNC path (i.e., \\192.168.1.1\sharename)
should work if you have the proper user permissions to access the
share. If it doesn't work, try pinging the IP address to see if you
have connectivity. If you don't, double check your IP information
that you recieved for your VPN connection (ipconfig /all) to make sure
that it jives with your remote environment.
