can't bootup - no paging file error

HELP
Right after the login screen, I get a message saying "no paging file or it is too small". It proceeds to tell me how to correct it after I boot up, but I can't boot up. It returns me to the login screen

The computer is IBM netvista with 2000 Pro. It was working fine and I added a second drive. It said new hardware installed, must reboot. That's when it all started. I took out the new drive and set everything as originally set. Still get same message. There's plenty of memory and disk space. It is NTFS so I can't use DOS to access.
I've tried "last know good" and "safe mode" with same result. I tried to do install repair, and it asks for service pack 2 but when I put it in, it won't accept it. I'm at my wits end
I don't have a drive backup to restore the drive. I will lose all if I start from scratch. I need a solution
Thanks in advance
Richard

page filing deals with virtual memory I think. Start the computer in safe mode by pressing F8 after start up. open control panel, system, advanced, performance settings, advanced, and up the virtual memory. I think that should do it, other wise I don't know.
