Can't boot up Win XP

Hi,
I can't get my XP system to boot. BIOS is ok, but after bios, it suppose to
show two-tone striped blue Windows screen but instead show a long message
that apologies for not able to log in with a few choices like Safe Mode, Safe
Mode and Networking, Safe Mode and Command Prompt, Last Good configuration
and normal configuration. I tried everyone of them but after I press enter,
it will show the two-tone striped blue Windows screen and then a blue screen
appears with some words written on it but it only appears for a second or two
so I have no idea what it says. Immediately, it goes back to the starting
point and the same thing is repeated again.

I have some important data which I really want to retrieve before
reinstalling the system. Is there a way I can boot up XP system? Btw, the PC
(notebook) is originally Windows 98 but I reinstalled it with XP a few years
ago.

Please help. I really don't know what to do. Thank you.
