can't authenticate via admin account

man, i done tried everything to fix this to no avail. here's the scoop...

i administer 3 small, non-trusted domains. one is w2k3 with dns. one is w2k3
withOUT dns. one is w2k without dns. i then have a small handful of
non-domained users. this is where my story takes place. in the past, i have
had some troubles with remote management of non-domained, wxp boxes. but, i
seem to have figured that out (turn off simple file sharing, if
you're wondering). however, i have a new user with a new wxpsp2 box that is
just befuddling me. i CAN log in locally with the local admin account. but
any attempt to manage this box remotely using the local admin for
authentication fails.

for example: from a w2k3 box where i'm logged in as a domain admin, i open regedit and select
'connect network registry.' i then get challenged for authentication
(something that doesn't happen on my other non-domained boxes). when i enter
the client's local admin and password, i get this (http://www.cheshirecousin.com/shmeg/from2003.jpg) dialog. when i try the same thing from my wxp pc, where i am not logged in as a domain admin, i get this (http://www.cheshirecousin.com/shmeg/fromxp.jpg) dialog.

i have reset the password. but, like i said earlier, i CAN log on locally to
the client box with that admin account.

so, i double-checked the firewall. it's disabled. but, to be sure, i
enabled, ticked 'allow remote' and then re-disabled. i disabled simple file
sharing. i ran scandisk. i ran sfc. i un/reinstalled the network adaptor. i set up a second admin account. i gave the user admin rights. nothing. zip. zilch. nada.

so, to recap: i have a wxpsp2 box that i can log in to locally with the built-in admin account, but i cannot use ANY local admin accounts on that box for authentication when managing remotely.

whew!

so...anyone?

thx,

evan
