Can't add contacts to my address book

I get an unknown error has occurred and contact cannot be added. Any help?

The contacts folder sometimes gets changed to the wrong type of
folder. See if this helps: Click on Tools, then Windows Contacts,
then right click in the empty space on the right side of this new
window, then Click on Customize This Folder, then the triangle,
then Contacts, then Apply, then OK, then close the contacts
window. Now try adding a contact.
 
Thanks. I have tried that and it still won't add. I appreciate it though.
