Can't access some URL's, others okay.

G'day all;

I'm hoping someone here can help me. But for the last week or so, I can't
get to _some_ URL's! Most others are okay...

I'm on a LAN, running XP Pro/SP2, and everything is updated
automatically...and has been checked manually. On another computer on that
same LAN, I can get to the URL's in question, no problem. So it's not a
router, DSL adapter, or ISP problem. It's got to be in/with my machine.
I'm guessing some security setting in IE. That happened once before, when I
got too paranoid (reading NG's like this one...:)-o)!) and tightened up the
security too much. But I'd reset things to "default" and everything worked
okay again. Tried that. No joy!

I scanned through 10's of thousands of this (& related) NG's articles
looking for similar problems--found lots. But nothing that was suggested
worked. I've been through the MS knowledge base--although I suspect that
I'm not building the right query to get a useful answer.

Since then I've flushed cookies, temporary files, cache, and the DNScache.
I've checked (& renamed) HOSTS, LMHosts, my IE options, and reinstalled
JAVA. I've checked the adapter, run "NetDiag" and checked "Winsock2" for
corruption, the LSP for consistency, checked the registry for problems or
corruption, run through all of the tips in CastleCops, run a dozen different
Trojan, spyware, and other malware checkers, AdAware, HiJackThis!,
CWShredder, and SpyBotR&D. I work behind a firewall by eTrust (CA), run the
MS anti-spy (beta), Venus SpyTrap, and have run CounterSpy. I've disabled
them, and still no-go.

I'm outta ideas... Anybody??

Hi,
A few more possibilities:
* Power cycle the router and modem.
* Delete the Temporary Internet Files *folder* for the affected user
account. You can delete the TIF folder from Administrator.
* Does the problem occur from another user account on this machine? A new
user account may help.
* Do the sites have anything in common? Are they secure sites?

Hope this helps,
Don

Okay. I'll do that (can't at the moment). But since that same router and
DSL adapter serve that same LAN, it's a stretch. But I'll give it a shot.
I've seen stranger things cause problems...

As I'd mentioned previously, I'd emptied it, I didn't delete it. I'll do
that next. Thanks!
* Does the problem occur from another user account on this machine? A new
user account may help.
An interesting tip. I'd not tried that. Thanks!
* Do the sites have anything in common? Are they secure sites?
Yes. The target site is an HTTPS site. However, I maintain our websites,
and they're all managed via an HTTPS access server as well. And that seems
to work just fine...

You gave me a couple of good tips, thanks, Don. I'll give 'em a shot and
report back after I do...

Dusty

Nope. Using a different user account didn't work either.

Can someone reading here point me to a list of steps to take to resolve
being unable to reach _some_ URL's?

Something along the line of, if I were starting from scratch, what are all
of the things I should check in order to find out why I suddenly can't get
to certain URL's...that used to work just fine. I suspect some IE setting.
But I've gone through them forwards and backwards and can't find anything
amiss...

For example, some months back I visited:
http://www.sourdo.com/original_san_fran.htm. When I clicked on the "BUY"
icon, I managed to get to and post a purchase.

But today, when I click on the "BUY" icon, I get the, "The page cannot be
displayed" error. I've tried all of the things recommended on that
diagnostic page. Nothing works. The failing URL is:
http://www.aitsafe.com/cf/add.cfm?u...www.sourdo.com/original_san_fran.htm&units=14

If I do this from another machine on this same LAN, also running Win XP, I
get right through no problem. So the trouble MUST be in my machine! I do
research and writing, and I keep finding sites that I can't get to with this
very same error message. Doing so on another machine works okay.

FWIW; I'm considered pretty computer savvy, and usually fix these kinds of
things by working them out. But I've been fighting this issue for over a
week, and I'm flat outta working ideas...I've gotta get this fixed!

TIA,
Dusty

Not yet. But I shall as soon as this note goes out...

OTOH; the problem isn't restricted to secure sites. I can access my various
websites and do management on them just fine, and that's accessed via https
on my host service providers arena.

Another example of a URL I can't reach: www.frontpagemag.com. And that's
not https... And on a similar machine on that same LAN I have no problems
at all. It's gotta be an IE or internet connection setting. BUT WHAT???
*&^%$#@!~

Thanks for takin' a lash at it, Don.

Anybody else got any ideas?

Hello all;

For those of you following my travails these last few days and those that
chimed in both on and off-list; I found the problem: bad name (DNS)
servers!

For some reason, some years back, I changed from using my access providers
DNS's to using my host providers DNS's. While I'd checked and double
checked them to be sure I had 'em right, I hadn't tried to replace 'em.

Then, as I was contemplating my 2nd week chasing this *&^%$#@! issue, I
happened to notice that I'd left the two, older, DNS numbers in my "Network
connections", "Local Area Connection", properties, TCP/IP, properties, DNS
server addresses list. So I shuffled 'em to the top...rebooted...problem
gone!

Thanks to all that replied--I appreciated your willingness to jump in.

HTH someone else that's having problems...
