cant access shared files after a specific date

i have a slight problem that ive been tryin to deal with since friday. And
after spending an exhaustive time finding possible answers this is how it
plays out:

I have 2 computers on the network, i call em Gamer and Downloader..named for
the obvious reasons, here are the specs

Gamer:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.21 Ghz
1 GB DDR400 RAM (2x512 PC3200 OCZ)
ASUS K8N-E Deluxe
WD 160 GB HDD
LG GSA4120B 12X DVD+/- R/RW CD-R/RW 40x24x40
GeForce FX 5200 128 MB
(plannin on upgrading this as soon as prices go down or more vid cards hit
the market)
WinXP Pro SP2

Downloader:
ECS L7VMM3 Pro3200A+ (Athlon XP 2200+ @ 1.8 Ghz in system properties)
512 MB DDR266 RAM (PC2700 Kingston Value)
WD 120 GB HDD
FUJITSU 3 GB HDD
CD-R/RW 40x20x48x (cant recall manufacturer rite now)
(everything else is onboard including video)
WinXP Pro SP2

Now heres wat happened, until the 12th of October whatever i had downloaded
was accessible by this machine over the network

13th of October i install the new updates from windows update, under the
Add/Remove programs its KB834707

15th of October i try to run a few things off the download machine on this
machine, didnt work, tried copying them, didnt work, nothing i try to access
across both machines over the network works, the files themselves work on the
PC's they're on but cant be copied or accessed from the other machine

anything created and datestamped prior to 13th of October works across the
network

I checked under system restore, and on the 13th of october it created a
restore point after the installed of Software Distribution Service 2.0,
checkin this up on the Microsoft website, they had a patch for the System
Management Server 2.0....was wondering if this had any connection to it cuz
the vulnerability has to do with IE. Cudnt rule out the possibility though.

I was hoping to find out if any1 else has experienced this or could give me
some info or help

just tried disabling the firewall on both machines, rebooting and trying to
access the files, nop..its still those specific files after the 13th which i
cant copy or run across the network. that rules out that possibility because
even with the firewall enabled i could access any other file that im sharing
on the network.

i tried system restore on both machines and it wont let me restore back to
the 12th of october, i hope u can see that this is becoming a real issue for
me because anything im downloading since then i cant access across the
network.

Not sure what all that update does, but I started having numerous glitches
sometime this week. My system was new in May and has been running fine
with SP2 since Aug 15. Windows Auto Updates installed KB834707 on my PC
Oct 15. My PC is on a UPS and behind a router.

Suddenly I got a couple of spontanious reboots (while unattended).
Windows acknowledged a problem, but no clue what or why. Everytime I
started IE or followed a link, it attempted unsuccessfully to install HP
Image Zone. GameChannel.exe would try to access memory 0x00000000 every
time I closed it. Event viewer showed mrtRate service failing (could not
find a file) even though I have never used Quicken (which came on my PC).
Not sure what else.

And now, "Help and Support" fails to function properly. When it starts,
pchnotify.exe crashes, then "HP Instant Support auto update" hangs part
way through a download while popups complain about error installing a
plugin manager and a plugin failing. I tried HP's SP26275 "HP Help Center
and Support Update" which refuses to install (no reason). So the "Help
and Support" button in Windows is no help at all.

I set XP Home to not reboot during Win errors and do more logging. But
now XP Home will not reboot even when I tell it to (just spins up hard
drive continuously, monitor sleeps, never resets). It does shut down
properly.

It does not appear to be a hardware problem because:
memtest86+ no errors and reboots fine
WD disk SMART and diagnostics clean
64-bit XP Pro beta runs and reboots fine
64-bit SuSE 9.1 Linux runs and reboots fine

Now HP has a long list of programs from or installed by HP for my PC that
should have been updated BEFORE installing SP2. Not sure which if any
were updated by HP Updates Backweb. No updates listed for after
installing SP2. But I really had no problems before that KB834707 Windows
Update 10/15.

I have A HP PC with
2.8Ghz P4
512 mb Ram
120 Gb Ultra Dma Hard Drive
nvidia GeForce FX5100

It dosnt Have KB834707 Installed But Still Comes UP With The Crashed
PCHNOTIFY.EXE Message When I log Into One User Account Though On The
Other Account It Starts Up Fine.

Could This Be The Answer? Just A New User Acount?
If not Could I Have Some Help Fixing My Problem?
