Can't access printer or shared files

Hello,
I have a desktop running Vista Ultimate and a laptop with XP. I'm using a
Belkin Pre n router and I can connect both computers to the internet, desktop
is wired and laptop is wireless. My problem I started a home network and can
open files that are on my laptop using the desktop but can't get files that
are on my desktop to my laptop. My printer is also connected to the desktop
and I can't print from the laptop. While I'm on the same workgroup I get the
message

" \\ (desktop computer name) is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the
server to find out if you have access permission. Logon failure: the user has
not been granted the requested logon type at this computer".

This is a home network so I guess I'm the administrator. I've tried changing
computer names, deleting passwords and stopping McAfee firewall.
I really need to print from my laptop without directly connecting the printer.
Please help, I have spent many hours trying to fix and I think I'm only
making it worse.
Thanks
Charlie
