used to be able to access www.forbes.com but whenever I now try I get a
"can't access" message. Using XP with IE6.0 browser. Worked with my ISP for
45 minutes to verify all settings; disable Norton Anti-virus and Zone labs
firewall and still no go. All other sites work fine. Also tried Mozilla
Foxfire browser and still can't access forbes. Help!

Search for a HOSTS file (just HOSTS- no extension- not HOSTS.SAM) It may be
a hidden file. Open it with notepad. If there are entries for forbes.com,
delete those lines or put # in front of the entry, then File> Save.
HOSTS.SAM (if you have it) provides a tutorial of sorts.

Other possibilities:
Corruption in the History folder or Temporary Internet Files folder. Those
folders should be deleted. See: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Hope this helps,
Don

only entry in hosts is:
127.0.0.1 localhost

had already deleted all temp & history files with ISP

Yes I did all that and attempted to follow Knowlegde base article 293402
listed in one of your posts but I could find no "contents.ie5" directory
under "temporary internet files" or figure our how to type del index.dat.and
press enter. will look at your newest links

Did you delete the History FOLDER and the TIF FOLDER? Delete all cookies?
Delete the Cookie folder?

It's odd that Mozilla would have the same problem. Any other security
programs running? Are you sure that Zonelarm was off?

I wish there weren't so many possibilities, but:

The Content.IE5 folder is located in a hidden folder in your user profile.
Here are some steps that will get to the folder holding content.ie5:

1. start \ run \ cmd
2. cd /d %userprofile%
3. cd local settings\temporary internet files
4. dir /a

Or, to enable Explorer to "see" these files:
1. right click 'Start' and select 'Explore'
2. Tools \ Folder Options... \ View
3. check "show hidden files and folders"
4. uncheck "Hide protected operating system files [recommended]"
5. click OK
