Can't access network shares

On our small network we have XP Pro and 2K Pro running on our clients
connecting to a 2K domain controller. The 2K boxes have no problem
connecting during logon and using all mapped drives.
The XP Pro boxes login no problem (much slower though) and do map the
drives no problem. You can use them immediately after boot but after a
period of time (30 minutes or so), when you try and connect to these
drives... the computer will hang the application trying to access the share
(even explorer.exe) and the connectiion will just time out. This is NEVER an
issue on the 2K machines.

Anyone heard of this before or have any ideas?

Thanks!

I'm experiencing very similar problems on a small network where all
machines are using XP Pro. One of the machines behaves exactly as you've
described. To troubleshoot, I used a machine running Win2K Pro, and, again
as you've described, there were absolutely no problems whatsoever, and the
mapping and connections are much faster.

In a matter which may or may not be related, the TCP/IP information on the
XP machines is pretty fragile, sometimes getting lost with simple
configuration changes, e.g. going from the "Eye candy" display to an
optimized desktop.

Sorry that I have no idea as to why these things are happening, but
thought you'd appreciate knowing that you aren't alone.

Neil

What do the event logs on the "server" say? If they say something about
irpstacksize read on...

I believe this problems may be due to Norton Antivirus S/W.

Norton have this advisory (long URL may wrap to new line and need repair)

http://service1.symantec.com/suppor...88256d03005eb145?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

and Microsoft have this one..

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;106167

HOWEVER the above only mention the error message being "Not enough server
storage...". I found it can also give access permission errors (something
like "Access denied" or "Insufficient acesss", I can't remember exactly).
These are really confusing to someone trying to set up a home LAN.

Here is what I found...

irpstacksize = 11 (dec) causes access permission errors.
irpstacksize = 13/14 the error changed to "Not enough server storage" or
similar.
irpstacksize = 15 and my network shares now work fine.
