Can't access Display Properties Desktop tab

I am suddenly unable to access the Desktop tab in my Display Properties
control panel applet. Clicking the tab causes the applet to hang. I can
access the other tabs okay. This suddenly occurred when I was making
changes using this tab. After accessing it two or three times without
problem, it suddenly hung.

Any ideas?
 
This generally has to do with using 3rd party programs.
