can't access Device Manager

When I try to open Device Manager I constantly get the 'windows cannot acces
the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate
permissions to access the item'

I have changed nothing to my knowledge on the comp and am the only user of
the comp. Can't understand why it says this.

I have XP SP2 and would appreciate any help you can give.....
