New features
1) 1 picolitre dot sizes -> superior photo printing. (see 2nd link above
for technical discussion and presentation slides detailing benefits)
2) 9600dpi -> improved resolution -> finer placement of dots -> smoother
prints
3) world's largest 3.6" LCD monitor on any inkjet all-in-one printer
4) improved 100 year ChromaLife inkset (you never know until 100 years
have passed, so we'll see....)
5) overlay capability - print photos with your own handwritten images
overlayed on top
6) direct photocopying of CD/DVD face to a blank CD/DVD!

Although this may be similar to the Pixma MP950 released in the USA,
they are using different inksets.

Looks like the japanese version has bluetooth. US models don't support
cd/dvd printing by default. The ink differences well the Japanese
version is using the bci-7 inks where the US and I believe Europe is on
CLI-8, which I think the main difference is the US/European models use
chips to monitor ink use and LED lights to blink when empty. I don't
know if BCI-7 tanks share the same feature, I suspect not. I don't
know the color difference between bci-7 and cli-8 but both are
chromalife-100. But it's possible to tell the printer it's Japanese
or European or American.

For some reason America/Europe got this feature first in the ip4200 and
the mp800. Basicly the ip5000 printhead IIRC. It would be more
accurate to say this feature was new in the mp800 and ip4200.
3) world's largest 3.6" LCD monitor on any inkjet all-in-one printer

Handy, wonder if it's useful in the sense of resizing.

4) improved 100 year ChromaLife inkset (you never know until 100 years
have passed, so we'll see....)

100 years in an album. 30 years under glass using premium papers a 5
year improvement over the old chromalife ink, 10 years exposed to air
using pr-101.
Please canon, for the love of god, consider offering the imagePROGRAF
inks on your conusmer line.
5) overlay capability - print photos with your own handwritten images
overlayed on top

Don't know about this feature, this sounds new.
6) direct photocopying of CD/DVD face to a blank CD/DVD!

Handy, not that I mind the old method of scan a 120mm*120mm area and
using cd-label print, but I have to admit that's somewhat nifty.

Now... what would be really cool, not for me personaly but for others,
is to have either an updated mp780 model, or offer the document feeder
and fax on a 800 or 900 model.
