Canon MP510... ink refill kits vs. OEM..Advice anyone??

V

Hi folks, I need to replace my black/ color cartridges on my recently
bought Canon MP510.

The thing drinks ink pretty well but a nice performer. Couple of
questions for printer-savvy folk here...

A) Caveats by Canon aside, has anyone found it possible to use these
ink-refill kits successfully
and if so, any recommendation on who has the lowest price online for
these?

B) If I should buy OEM just to be safe, any recommendations on who is
the cheapest reseller online
for new oem cartridges?

C) I mainly use black, and, not for photo. Is there any lower-price
compatible OEM alternative to the model CLI-8BK which would be simply
a black print grade vs. photo-grade quality ink.

Big Thanks in advance to any and all who know of this stuff.

Best Regards,

Mike

Do not use any "generic" refill kits, but you're fine using most compatible
tanks and bulk inks. You will, however, need to get around the chips on the
tanks, which isn't too difficult.

Lots of information at www.alotofthings.com and other ink sellers.

compatable prefilled carts require that you take the chip off the OEM cart
and attach it to the compatable cart. Refilling works well on the Canon OEM
carts. You can also google MIS and Hobbicolors who sell good compatable
aftermarket inks for these printers. Hobbicolors is the least expensive,
but I don't know if their CLI-8 refill ink is pigment-based. You can call
them and ask. I've read that MIS black ink for these large carts is
pigment-based. You don't want to use dye-based inks in the large black
cart. Some aftermarket ink vendors sell prefilled BCI-3ebk and refill bulk
ink for these carts that is actually dye-based. Not a good idea from what
I've read.

Don't bother to look for the absolute cheapest inks. Alotofthings sells
Formulabs bulk inks and MIS is reputed to sell Image specialist inks. I
don't know where Hobbicolors gets their inks, but users report that they are
good.

Hi Mike
To be honest , if you mainly print black , get a laser .I got the HP 1020
here in Canada for $120 and it comes with a full toner cart for 2000 pages.
With the money you save , you could use genuine Canon carts in the 510 and
not worry about compatibility.

I have the 510 also , but I'm waiting for my ip 3000 to die first. There is
a company in Canada that sells refilled carts for the 510

http://www.atlanticinkjet.com/canon-inkjets-product-PIXMA-MP510.asp

I used their compat cars for the 3000 and everything worked fine. Haven't
tried the 510's yet of course.
Just a suggestion

Thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated,

In the UK Cartridge World shops refill these cartridges AND are able to
reset the chips.
I'm not sure if that is the same in the US and Canada though. Worth checking
out.

Compatible is just a word.  Canon ink is consistently good.  You know what you are getting and it does not damage the printer.

I used to work in a Canon repair centre, and there I saw the side of the
"refill" debate that home users don't see - the tendency for refills to
cause head-blocking problems and other problems. And these printers were
mostly in warranty, so they hadn't had much use...
So I don't recommend that you use refills or compatibles at all.
If cost is an issue, and quality is not your prime concern, why are you
printing colour at home at all? Printing services cost less.
If you just need black, use a mono laser - they are much cheaper to run.

Just out of interest, how long ago were you working in the Canon repair
facility? I ask for several reasons. Firstly, I think, overall, as
consumers have become more savvy and demanding, that 3rd party inks are
tending to be better formulated so there are less issues with quality
control today than in the past. Secondly, if it is long enough ago,
Canon bubblejet printers were both notoriously unreliable regardless of
what ink was used in them. This was back when the printers used the
integrated head which was supposed to be disposable, which does go back
a few years, but I am wondering what time period you were working in the
repair of the printers, as it may explain your statement regarding 3rd
party inks and the major difficulties, since others on this newsgroup
and elsewhere have very differing results.
