Canon lide30 scanner a lemon?

Is the Canon lide30 scanner a lemon? I have had nothing but trouble with mine,
and after doing some Google searching I have found numerous other people are
having the same problem.

We all seem to be having the same problem. The scanners work at first, then
quit, displaying the messages "cannot communicate with scanner", "cable may be
disconnected", and "twain error". I've yet to read a post from anyone who has
been able to correct the problem. To top it off, I can't seem to get Canon to
send me my rebate. I'm beginning to think Canon is bad news.

I have used the Canon 1220U for several years without trouble. The 1220U
is essentially a LIDE20 without two buttons. Ed Hamrick who has used
hundreds of scanners recommends them. It may be worth trying a demo
version of his software (free) to see if you can communicate to the
scanner with that.

http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#hp lists Hewlett-Packard
PSC 1200 as a supported scanner, and I assume that means the 1200
series. I wish I'd known, when I couldn't use HP's supplied software
for my PSC 1210 because it crashed my system. :)

Every once in awhile I get this message. One of three fixes works:

- completely shut down computer for a couple of minutes and then fire up
- run disc maintenance program to defrag, etc. and registry cleanup
- just reload the driver (I keep a copy of my installation disc handy)

Oh, be sure you don't have drivers from an older scanner on your system.
Kill them and remove older scanner from device manager.

By and large my LIDE30 is a workhorse. An older N670U bit the dust after
two years of heavy use.

Incidentally, I get the same message on occasion for my Canon printer.
I agree that Canon customer service is pretty bad, one reason I did
not buy one of their digital cameras.

I recently purchased the new Epson 2580 and had a great experience with
their customer service people. And, the 2580 is one heck of a scanner.

Hope this helps.
