Canon i475 (reset) ink counter - is it trustworthy?

My Canon i475 printer indicated that ink was 'low'.

I installed a new cartridge but the ink level did not change on the
printer. After a little investigation in the help menus for the printer
I found the 'reset ink counter' button and reset the printer. Life is good.

Suspicion: The printer does not have any idea how much ink is left, but
'counts' the amount it thinks it dispensed and lets you know when it
'thinks' it is running low.

Could it be that the cartridge may be only half empty but Canon have set
the counter threshold so as to encourage us to buy more ink?

Does anyone know what the ink counter really does? Are my suspicions
reasonable? The printer seems to be clueless when you put a new
cartridge in!

Maybe I should reset the counter and run the cartridge until I see the
print quality going off?

Thoughts and opinions welcome.

Expelled ink droplets, more or less.

You can do that.
