Canon 9950F

I recently read a review of the Canon 9950F comparing it very favorably with
the Epson 4870. Has anyone in this group had any experience with the 9950F
as a film scanner?

Yes, I use it for medium format and for that purpose it's quite
acceptable. For 35mm I think a dedicated 2700-3200ppi filmscanner is a
better investment. I use a Minolta 5400 for that. See also:

Wilfred, thanks very much for the information. Your comparison link is very
interesting.

I have one of these and it comes with 3 plastic formes used with 5"x4", 35mm
negatives and slides.
The slides form works the best, and the other two cannot flatten a curved
negative and this requires pretreatment by storing the negative under a
weight for a while.

If you have thousands of B&W 9cm x 5cm negatives then you will have to make
your own forme - which is a nuisance.

For oddly shaped snap-shot negatives the machine gives acceptable results if
you just lay the negatives onto the platern emulsion-side down (check this)
and then scan in film/negative mode, and then use photoshop (or similar) to
make positives and adjust contrast etc. The area available on the platern
for this is not A4 but only the area equal to the illuminated part in the
cover.

I am having trouble with this scanner at the moment because the computer
"will not recognize it" possibly due to my having just installed the XP SP2
upgrade.

Has anyone else found this problem?
