cannot use pause/play/stop action buttons to control narration wav

i am trying to control narration in a ppt presentation (2003) through action
buttons.
i have read that this is possible, and that by adding play, pause and stop
action buttons, i should be able to control how the wav file plays.
my problem is that whilst my pause and play buttons work (somewhat), the
play button is starting the narration from the begining everytime, even
though i have it set to start "from last position". which i understand
should start the narration from where it was paused. similarly, the pause
button does the same thing, although i can see why, as you cannot set the
pause button to start from a specific point.
this is really frustrating, as the whole idea of pausing and resuming audio
play is so that people can ask questions, and not have to listen from the
whole thing from the beginning.
i'm running Windows Vista, and office 2003.

any help on this would be really appreciated.

Try NOT embedding the sound and see if that works. (Reduce the setting in
tools > options>general for "link to sound files with size >" to lower than
the file size. put the music in the same folder as the pres REINSERT the
music and try again. If you are showing on a different computer remember to
take the whole folder.

Use a play with previous and a triggered pause action

great! that worked. but what a pain. so basically, if you embed a sound file
the controls wont' work? what about if i linked a mp3, would the controls
work still? i'm asking since these files are huge - 1G up, and there's
several. so i need to get them to a more manageable size.

any additional ideas would be most welcome.
thanks
Tania
