Cannot upgrade my color quality to 16-bit

I'm not computer savvy at all, but I do know the procedure to update it. I'm
trying to use some new software that requires 16-bit color. Mine has been
set at 8-bit (low) since my husband reinstalled XP (after many, many problems
with it from the time we got it a year ago.) Adjusting the resolution is
wierd too and was hard to figure out (not standard procedure). We don't even
have an option to upgrade the color quality. I've tried all the
troubleshooting things and am ready to tear my hair out. Help.

You normally update the video adapter drivers to get better resolution and
color settings.

You must know the name of the video adapter. You can do this by using Belarc
Advisor.

Once you know the name of the video adapter, then you can go to the
manufacturer's web site and find the drivers you require.

If the video adapter is a built-in, you should go the computer
manufacturer's web site to get the video adapter's drivers.

Good Luck

And does "everything" include installing the graphics adapter driver (which
should have been the *FIRST* thing you should have done)?

The same thing happened to me on my Dell. After a virus or something hosed
up my system and reinstalled XP Pro.
My resolution and color quality were at bare minimum and wouldn't change,
along with various other problems.
I called Dell support and they sent me 2 CD's (Priority mail at no charge,
less than 48 hrs). After running the 2 CD's, everything was back to normal.
I'd be lying if I said I understood what happened, but it worked.
Whatever company made your computer probably has something similar.

Good luck:

Thank you very much. My husband came home and said about the same
thing--without all the helpful details of how to go about it. I'll try it.

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it. Chat rooms like this restore my faith
in humanity! I have NO faith in technology. lol
