Hello. "MS Internet Explorer has encountered a problem
and needs to close. Mod Name winspool.drv App Ver
6.0.2800.1106 Mod Ver 4.10.0.1998 Offset 000016c3."
This crash happens when I try to run Windows Update during
the "scanning for updates" function. The scanner gets to
about 67%, and this message always pops up. I am running
Windows 98SE. How can I solve this? Thanks.

Windows Update Fails:
Disable your anti-virus when obtaining the updates.
Make sure that your firewall is allowing the connection to Windows Update .
This would be on ports 80 and 443.

Frank, I followed instructions to Repair Internet Explorer
by using the W98SE "repair" button found via Add/Remove
Software. Now I have received the message: "Internet
Explorer 6 cannot be repaired. Please run Setup again to
reinstall all components. What "Setup" is referred to?
Can I download it somewhere?

Scan Freezes at 66% on Windows 98 then you see a winspool.drv error
(spoolss.dll)
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot

Resolution:

This is a known issue involving the spoolss.dll file and McAfee's Virus Scan
software. The most common fix is to replace the Win98 version of
spoolss.dll (4.10.1998) with the WinME version (4.90.3000). However, there
have been a few cases since Win98/ME customers were migrated to the new
version of the Windows Update site (version 4) where they have the WinME
version installed and going back to the Win98 version resolves the issue.

The spoolss.dll file is protected by the operating system so you have to
manually replace it from a command prompt. To replace the file you will
need to boot Win98 while pressing the F8 key so you get the Windows 98
StartUp menu. On this menu, select option 5 and boot to a Command Prompt.
Use the Copy command to manually replace the file.

If replacing the file isn't an option, then make sure you are running the
current version of McAfee's Virus Scan product, which is version 7.0.
Version 7.0 allows you to configure the scanner so that it will exclude
files and folders from the scan. If you choose this option, then make sure
you exclude these items:

C:\Windows\Spool
C:\Windows\System\spoolss.dll

Should you need to Repair IE6, you'll have to overinstall it:

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you
use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall.
Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.
