Cannot Type In Text Box

I have a laptop with preinstaled Windows Xp Home Edi SP2.

When I click on a text box to type something the blinking cursor appears,
but when I press any key on the keybaord I get an error beep and no letter or
number appears in the text box.

My PPT is part of MS Office 2003.
 
Does this happen all of the time, for every presentation? What else is running?
Is there a dialog box running under the PowerPoint window that is maybe waiting
for a reply from you? Usually a red or orange icon would be showing in the
taskbar.
